The Coming Retirement Crisis

A survey by U.S. News and World Report indicates that more than half of 45 to 54 year olds have less than $50,000 saved for retirement.  This is consistent with the Federal Reserve Board's triennial Survey of Consumer Finances that found the median retirement account balance for 45 to 54 year olds was $55,400 in the 2004 survey.  Considering the average life expectancy in the United States is 75, coupled with the concern over the ability to fund Social Security benefits - the the dream of retirement looks bleaker than ever.

Families need a trusted advisor to help them map their financial future.   Consider the following findings from a 2005 survey by the John J. Heidrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University:
  • 12% of people say they will never be able to retire at all, up from 7% in 2000.
  • Nearly 70% of American workers plan to work full or part time jobs after they retire from their primary jobs.
  • Workers feel less confident than they did in 2000 to be financially able to leave the workforce ahead of traditional retirement age.
  • Retirement confidence is lowered by the debate ont he future of Social Security and recent corporate bankruptcies.
